Hydrological assessment of ungauged catchments (small catchments)

Objectives
 
The study set out to analyse all available data from the Mahanadi and Rushikula basins in order to:
  1. Develop a set of design aids to enable hydrologists and engineers to estimate flood and low flow characteristics for ungauged areas within the Mahanadi and Rushikulya basins.
  2. Provide a comprehensive set of tools to enable key hydrological information to be estimated from characteristic of the climate and geomorphology of any sub-basin.
 
Results and Recommendations
 
  1. The report is extremely thorough and comprehensive and provides a range of tools to enable estimation of say the flood peak of any required return period or the flow duration curve to be derived.
  2. Regression equations have been developed to permit these estimates to be derived from simple measurements such as catchment area, slope, stream length, available rainfall statistics (e.g. mean annual rainfall) etc.
  3. Assessment of the uncertainties in these estimated values is provided in each case.
  4. The report is perhaps not intended for the inexperienced user as some knowledge of hydrology is required to identify which approach to apply and to appreciate the limitations of the various methods.
